Australia's first dedicated Indigenous theme park attraction has broken new ground in communicating this ancient continent's human history with an immersive walk-through experience, celebrating historical and contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. Fascinating subjects such as totem culture and sacred creation stories are explored, and the challenging issues of European colonisation and the Stolen Generations are given their due respect.
Earthstory conceived, wrote, designed and produced the attraction in collaboration with indigenous consultants and architectural firm In_Sites (Australia). We led the overall story and theming, exhibit graphics and multimedia installations, and produced the stunning 10m x 3m 4K panoramic film “Creation of the Gold Coast”, a dramatisation of the local Yugambeh creation story narrated by a 3D video storyteller.
Other digital media includes an interactive map of Australia's 200+ indigenous language areas, animated Dreamtime stories, an interactive Aboriginal art colouring-in touchscreen, and subtitled footage of the Apology Speech. The ceiling of the interpretive theatre is home to a gigantic "Timeline Serpent" chronicling 80,000 years of indigenous living history, which is also internally lit with a programmable multicoloured lighting system that alters its appearance to synchronise with the surrounds and main audio-visuals in real-time.
Live wildlife exhibits ranging from Kangaroos, Koalas and Crocodiles to Tasmanian Devils and Tree Kangaroos, are interpreted through an indigenous lens to highlight their relevance to Aboriginal culture - not only as having totemic significance but also as characters with key roles within timeless creation stories.
In order to produce this complex and sensitive project we immersed ourselves in consultation, study and collaboration over a year-long development schedule, to arrive at an outcome that has garnered not only the approval but also the whole-hearted support of all stakeholders.
